Koen Bollen studied Art History and Theater Studies at the universities of Brussels, Leiden and Antwerp. He was dramaturgy staff member at the Junge Oper Stuttgart (2010-2014), where he worked on different world creations, a.o. Die Taktik by Jennifer Walshe, and developed various inclusive music theatre performances. He received the scholarship Musiktheater Heute 2012-2014, which resulted in the world creation Tonguecat at the Bayerische Staatsoper München (2016).
As freelance dramaturge he worked with a.o. director Jorinde Keesmaat on La clemenza di Tito at Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier and Louis Andriessen’s Odysseus’ Women & Anaïs Nin and Pascal Dusapins To be Sung for the Centre of Contemporary Opera in New York and Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ in Amsterdam.
Since January 2016 he’s a dramaturge at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. He was dramaturge for amongst others the creations by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui Exhibition, Requiem and Pelléas et Mélisande by Cherkaoui, Damien Jalet and Marina Abramović as well as for the children's pieces Banket! by Tom Goossens and When no one is watching by Jonas Vlerick. Season 2019-2020 he is dramaturg for Rusalka by Alan Lucien Øyen, RASA [after La Bayadère] by Daniel Proietto and Shéhérazade by Haider Al Timimi.
Koen Bollen teaches at the conservatory in Antwerp and the International Opera Academy in Ghent. He is co-editor and author of the book on the 50th history of Ballet Vlaanderen.
