The 2019-2020 season of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen

The new season at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen has something in store for everyone. Looking for an electrifying evening of opera or ballet? Come see one of our renowned opera and ballet productions. Prefer something a bit more accessible? The programme also features events that are just right for a first introduction to opera or ballet. Would you rather discover something completely new? The upcoming season certainly won't disappoint. One thing's for sure: the 2019-2020 season is going to be more dynamic than ever before!

THESE ARE THE CLASSIC TITLES

No shortage of big names, next season. For example, in our showstopping production of Verdi's Don Carlos as opener for the season, the celebrated director Johan Simons will make this political opera more relevant than ever. None other than choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker will be directing Mozart's ultimate relationship-testing farce, Così fan tutte. And with Le Sacre du printemps by dance legend Pina Bausch, in Cherkaoui / Bausch, you'll have the opportunity to witness an indelible piece of dance history.

In Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák, we'll plunge deeply into the tale of The Little Mermaid. Another well-known story, the classic La Bayadère, will be given a radical update by wunderkind Daniel Proietto in RASA [after La Bayadère]. A jaw dropping experience guaranteed!

THESE ARE THE IDEAL FIRST ENCOUNTERS

Do you prefer a sure bet? In Macbeth by Michael Thalheimer, one of the highlights of the previous opera season will be returning to Ghent. In Khan / Cherkaoui / Pite, you can (re)discover three successful productions that have recently graced our stage.

If you would like to discover emerging young dance talent, you won't want to miss Choreolab #14: the dancers of Royal Ballet Flanders are given the chance to develop their individual talents by creating their own choreographies. The rich history of our house will provide them with plenty of inspiration.

THESE ARE THE NEW DISCOVERIES

The absolute musical revelation of the year has got to be Faust by Robert Schumann. Philippe Herreweghe, who will be conducting, has called it nothing short of a masterpiece. We will also be bringing a long-forgotten opera to Belgium at last: in Der Schmied von Gent, theatre director Ersan Mondtag will make his opera debut with a production that's bound to deliver his signature style: visual, political and provocative.

In the chamber opera Usher, present and past will be mingled: contemporary composer Annelies van Parys will rework sketches by Claude Debussy into a bloodcurdling night at the opera. The production is based on a story by the master of Gothic horror, Edgar Allan Poe. In this anniversary year, we'll also present a spectacular look back on 50 years of Royal Ballet Flanders. The performance Brabants / Cherkaoui features work by two iconic figures in our house: founder Jeanne Brabants and the current artistic director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

But perhaps the most experimental production of this season will be C(H)OEURS 2020 by Alain Platel. Together with the chorus, orchestra, dancers and singers, Platel will create a completely new artform based on the greatest hits of Verdi and Wagner.

CONCERTS, YOUTH PERFORMANCES, AND MUCH MORE

Along with opera and ballet, there will be plenty more to discover next season as well. For example, concerts will be given a more prominent role. Fans of Luciano Berio will be delighted to hear that his work will be performed on multiple occasions. Other highlights to look forward to are surely Der Jasager by Kurt Weill and Verdi's Requiem.

In the upcoming season, young talents such as Tom Goossens, Haider Al Timimi and Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe will also be bringing exhilarating, hard-hitting performances such as Shéhérazade / L'heure espagnole and The Sad Smile, or The Tearing Face: A Revue. And many of our performances will be accompanied by extra activities offering in-depth background and related inspiration.
