Juliet Burnett

Born in Sydney (Australia), Juliet Burnett started dancing at the age of 5. She was first trained in the Cecchetti method before also receiving training in the RAD method. Juliet was accepted into The Australian Ballet School, and upon graduation, she began her career with The Australian Ballet in 2003. There she was continuously promoted and danced a great variety of prestigious roles, such as Odette in Swan Lake and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet (both by Graeme Murphy), and the title roles in Giselle (Maina Gielgud after Adolphe Adam), and La Sylphide (Auguste Bournonville), as well as leading roles in modern works, such as those by Jiri Kylian, Wayne McGregor, George Balanchine and Glen Tetley. After 12 years, she left The Australian Ballet in 2015 as a senior artist, and continued dancing as a freelance artist, guesting with West Australian Ballet, in various galas, and with Chunky Move for Re-make, created on her by Melanie Lane. She also collaborated on a dance film, Letting Blood, for Dark MOFO Festival 2016. Additionally, she initiated a relationship with the dance community in her second home country, Indonesia, including fulfilling a lifelong dream of initiating a workshop program to bring ballet to the underprivileged in Indonesia, with the help of the Ballet.Id Foundation and the Australian Embassy in Jakarta. In 2010 Juliet was awarded the Khitercs Scholarship, used to travel to ballet companies around the world, and to spend time in Indonesia learning her grandmother’s art of Javanese dance, and take acting tuition in the theatrical and meditational techniques pioneered by Juliet’s uncle, W.S. Rendra.
Juliet’s other accolades include nominations for Most Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer (Re-make by Melanie Lane) and Outstanding Achievement in Dance on Film (Letting Blood) in the 2017 Australian Dance Awards, Telstra Ballet Dancer Award 2009, and was named as Dancer to Watch 2008, 2011 and 2012 in Dance Australia’s Critics’ Survey. Since 2016 Juliet has been a first soloist dancer with the Royal Ballet of Flanders.
