Onegin

John Cranko

On its creation by the Stuttgart Ballet in 1965, Onegin was immediately described as ‘a new classic’. Contemporary and universal, with tormented characters of flesh and blood.

It is a story about the naive Tatyana and blasé dandy Yevgeni Onegin, two people who are naturally attracted to each other, but live in almost parallel worlds. The timing of their overtures is disastrous. When Tatyana confesses her love for him in a rural setting, Onegin dismisses her feelings with his worldly arrogance. When Onegin kills his friend Lensky in a duel, he is forced to leave – albeit with a tortured conscience. On his return three years later, the roles are reversed. Tatyana is now a lady of position and the wife of a prince of the high nobility. Onegin is filled with regret because she refuses to break her vow of fidelity. These are the very best ingredients for an epic love story.
