“There is so much emotion in this work, so much fire, that we would both be burnt to ashes if it touched us.” In the passionate story in verse about the village boy who falls in love with the gypsy girl and leaves everything behind to follow her, Leoš Janáček recognised his own feelings for his muse Kamila Stösslová.
This inspired him in 1917 to create a song cycle in 22 brief vignettes for tenor, alto, female chorus and piano. Janáček’s poetry is characterised by a mix of cruelty and tenderness, such that his music touches upon the essential, in a minimalism that implies the end of the opera genre. Ivo van Hove brings dramatic depth to the staging of this wrenching story full of open questions. Working from her fascination with the voice, the young Belgian composer Annelies Van Parys wrote a coda to this incisive work about exile.
