Opera21 / Nachtschade: Aubergine

Although this ancient member of the nightshade family has undergone a vast migration, the aubergine has always been able to adapt to its environment. Followed by documentary maker Lisa Tahon, McFadden travels this route in reverse, back to the origin: from the West via the Mediterranean countries, all the way to the Far East. In each culture she meets, she is hosted by the locals and learns to prepare a traditional dish and a new song.

By combining these recipes and melodies, she embraces a new chapter in this tradition of migration, together with what becomes for her the ideal group of musical colleagues, made up of a wide diversity of ‘nightshade cultures’: Roma, Belgian, Iraqi, Greek and Afro-Anatolian. Nachtschade: Aubergine will be a performance in which the audience can experience the rich cuisine of the aubergine in an exceptional combination of live music and travel documentary about what connects people and how mutual cross-pollination can reinforce our common identity.
