Le Duc d'Albe
Gaetano Donizetti (1797 — 1848) / Giorgio Battistelli (°1953)

Donizetti was unable to finish 'Le Duc d'Albe' before his death. Opera Vlaanderen asked the musicologists of the publishers Ricordi and the Italian composer Giorgio Battistelli to reconstruct the work and supplement it. The result became a fascinating shift from a typical 19th-century idiom to a contemporary musical language. Although the main story of 'Le Duc d'Albe' takes place during the 16th-century Spanish occupation of the Low Countries, the theme of 'Le Duc d'Albe' is the absurdity of all armed conflict.
Donizetti's opera Le Duc d'Albe unfolds at the beginning of the 'Beggars'' revolt against the occupying Spanish forces under the Duke of Alba. Hélène, whose father is the count of Egmont, who has been executed by Alba, seeks revenge and thus becomes an advocate of the revolt. She receives the backing of her beloved, the young Henri de Bruges, who thus unwittingly becomes an opponent of his own father, the Duke of Alba. Will blood prove thicker than political convictions and… than love?
With sets by the Spanish stage designer Alfons Flores (who has worked with the likes of La Fura dels Baus) and fascinating, enigmatic costumes by the Antwerp fashion duo A.F. Vandevorst, a Spanish-Flemish production team overseen by director Carlos Wagner will create an impressive visual stage setting. Appearing in the lead roles will be the Polish soprano Ania Jeruc as Hélène, the Italian tenor Enea Scala as her lover Henri and baritone Kartal Karagedik in the title role as the Duke of Alba.
