L'Oiseau de Feu

Crystal Pite, Édouard Lock, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui

From the intimate interpersonal rescue attempts in the work of Crystal Pite, to the universal and mythical rescue enacted by Orpheus who retrieves his Eurydice from the underworld, to Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's vision of Stravinsky's 'L'Oiseau de Feu', in which the human potential for self-rescue is revealed. This triptych is built up around three different visions of the theme of "rescue".
With L'Oiseau de Feu, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui offers a new take on the timeless Russian folk tale of the Firebird. The non-narrative version by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui centres around the morbid horror of the fire and the beauty of the renewed life that rises from it. At the crux is the power of a human being to be resurrected like a phoenix from the ashes. The music by the young Igor Stravinsky became his worldwide breakthrough.

In Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue, the Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite offers a highly personal take on the theme of rescue between two people. In ten duets, each of which highlights a particular aspect of "rescue", Crystal Pite approaches the human body from a poetic perspective. Her work is characterised by inventive theatricality, humour and a quick-witted language of movement.

In The Heart of August the Moroccan-Canadian choreographer Édouard Lock tackles one of the most iconic of stories. He stages the story of Orpheus and Eurydice from the perspective of Eurydice. She is no longer merely the motivation for Orpheus' journey, but rather, she is now the driver of a revised narrative.
