Memento Mori
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Hofesh Shechter, William Forsythe
A triptych featuring work by the Israeli-British choreographer and composer Hofesh Shechter, William Forsythe and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui that zooms in on confrontations. Between people and society, between the individual and the group or, as in Cherkaoui's creation 'Memento Mori', from which the programme takes its title, the ultimate confrontation: with death. Three choreographers, three approaches, three languages of movement.
In In your rooms, Hofesh Shechter paints a dark picture of a society in which the individual is increasingly alienated. The characters onstage reveal their shifting motives, their lack of control and their vulnerability through complex and moving encounters. Shechter creates his own musically raw and atmospheric compositions that are the perfect foil for his highly personal, animalistic yet eminently human language of movement.
William Forsythe's Workwithinwork presents a man whose simple contrasting movements are rapidly picked up by the dancers behind him. At the heart of the work is a sequence of duets, representing intense conversations between people. With Workwithinwork, Royal Ballet Flanders adds yet another masterpiece by William Forsythe to the company's extensive repertoire.
With Memento Mori, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presents the final piece in the trilogy that he created for Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. With In Memoriam, he explored the meaning of ancestors. In Mea Culpa, he dissected our negative inheritances. Now, with Memento Mori, he completes this thought with the question of what one leaves behind oneself, as legacy.
