In Noetic, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui examines the unique and instinctive impulse of humans to capture every detail of both the inner life and the outer cosmos in structures, and the simultaneous desire to break free from them. The endless, uncertain search for what is hidden behind these systems is translated by the choreographer into apparently mechanical patterns that are continuously alternated with his flowing and cyclical language of movement. The melancholy that accompanies this quest is also expressed in Szymon Brzóska’s minimalist music, surprising for its use of Eastern instruments.
The insatiable search and the eternal movement are also an underlying theme in the work of the iconic choreographer Pina Bausch. “Dance, dance, or we are lost,” said Bausch, quoting a young girl at a village festivity in Greece, who kept on encouraging her to dance. The original interpretation of The Rite of Spring takes this idea to its extreme: a girl is selected as a spring sacrifice to dance for the gods until death overcomes her. With his explosive composition of 1913, Igor Stravinsky created a revolutionary upheaval in musical history that marked the end of the Romantic and the beginning of the Modernist era. For her part, Pina Bausch created a benchmark with her overwhelming version of The Rite in 1975: a universally moving and still unparalleled masterpiece.
