CANCELLED: Khan / Cherkaoui / Pite
Kaash / Faun / Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue
In line with the jubilee year, in this trilogy Ballet Vlaanderen will present some of the most popular productions from past seasons.
In Kaash, Hindi for ‘if’, the British-Bengali choreographer Akram Khan presents his own vision of Shiva, the god of both destruction and creation. The world-famous artist Anish Kapoor translates this transcendent theme into a poetic stage setting. With his compelling rhythmic structures, the English-Indian composer Nitin Sawhney then creates parallels with Khan’s powerful movement idiom, rooted in the Indian dance form Kathak.
In his virtuoso duet Faun, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui created a new perspective on one of the most important works in music and dance history, namely Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune in the original, legendary choreography by Vaslav Nijinski. In Cherkaoui’s sensual version, he lets the faun meet his female counterpart in a complex game of animal attraction. Nitin Sawhney provides a fascinating contemporary translation into music.
In her highly acclaimed Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue, the Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite approaches the theme of rescue between two people in a very personal way. Petite’s work is characterized by a brilliant theatricality and a keen language of movement. In ten intimate duets, she shows us a close-up of the interaction between two people and never shies away from humour and self-questioning.
