Thu, May 29, 2025

Alban Berg’s opera Wozzeck is based on an unfinished play by the German writer Georg Büchner, composed of various fragmentary scenes. In his composition, Alban Berg gave an unstoppable momentum to the remaining fragments. He selected 15 scenes, reworked, cut, and combined passages. And he cast all of it into a crystal-clear structure. An overview.

Scene 1
Wozzeck is shaving the captain. He taunts Wozzeck, who merely replies ‘jawohl, Herr Hauptmann’.
Scene 2

Scene 3

Scene 4
A party in a tavern. Wozzeck sees Marie and the drum major dancing together. Wozzeck is accosted by a fool.
