Mystery Sonatas / For Rosa

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker

Music and geometry are like yin and yang in the oeuvre of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

In Mystery Sonatas / for Rosa she links the motif of the rose – a symbol of mystery since time immemorial – with Heinrich Biber’s 1676 Mystery Sonatas. The Bohemian composer was known for his scordatura technique, whereby the strings of the violin were tuned in an unusual way. A tour de force for violinist Amandine Beyer and her ensemble Gli Incogniti, both renowned figures in historically informed performance. De Keersmaeker confronts the fifteen mystery sonatas, written as an accompaniment to praying the rosary, with a new generation of Rosas dancers. Mystery Sonatas / for Rosa is also a tribute to resistance heroines: painter Rosa Bonheur, activists Rosa Parks and Rosa Luxemburg, De Keersmaeker’s former teacher Rosa Vergaelen and Rosa, the fifteen-year-old climate change victim who died during the floods in Wallonia last year.
