Untold is a performance that uses music and movement to highlight the Chinese roots of the story of Cinderella.

Untold explores Chinese identity through music and movement. Cinderella is undeniably one of the most widely read European fairy tales. It is believed that the story was first recorded in the 17th century by the Italian writer Giambattista Basile, but in reality, it is a version of a much older story, which has been told throughout history in various cultures around the world. One such predecessor is the Tang Dynasty story of Ye Xian, set in southern China and documented in the early 9th century. Untold retells Ye Xian's story by integrating contemporary classical music, movement, and Chinese and Western instruments into an immersive experience that blends genres, art forms, and cultures. In particular, Untold aims to show the vitality and heterogeneity of the Chinese transnational experience, by showing how the Chinese diaspora navigates the complex cultural spaces in different and unique ways.

A co-production by Muziektheater Transparant. Supported by Britten-Pears Arts en PRS Foundation.
