In conversation with Florentina Holzinger
With SANCTA, Florentina Holzinger brings her uncompromising theatrical language to the opera stage — raw, feminist, and impossible to ignore.
The Austrian Florentina Holzinger is a phenomenon in the performing arts. Her boundary-pushing productions are highly theatrical, blending canonical works with elements from popular culture. Performers from a wide range of underground cultures push their (naked) bodies to the extreme to confront audiences with pleasure, pain, and power. Her performances consistently cast a feminist light on the repertoire and on societal norms. In SANCTA, she does so for the first time through an opera: Sancta Susanna by composer Paul Hindemith. Who better than Florentina Holzinger herself to introduce us to her working methods and theatrical language? Chantal Pattyn (network manager at Klara) speaks with her and conductor Marit Strindlund. Together, they delve deeper into the provocative SANCTA, which can be seen at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in April.
