Love & Loss
De Keersmaeker / Forsythe / Raymond & Tregarthen

Loving odes to transience
In Love & Loss, our ballet company presents three moving dance performances in one evening. The programme opens with Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker's choreography to Bach's Second Cello Suite from the performance Mitten wir im Leben sind. Together, the dancer and cellist examine Bach's musical architecture. During the composition of his Cello Suites, Bach had to say goodbye to his wife Maria Barbara. He remarried Anna Magdalena Bach, who assisted him with his work until his death – including the Cello Suites. This is followed by William Forsythe's Quintett, a choreography that is considered one of his absolute masterpieces. Forsythe created this lyrical waltz for five dancers as a final love letter to his terminally ill wife. Finally, the company presents a new creation by choreographers Tiffany Tregarthen and David Raymond. This talented Canadian duo danced in many productions by their compatriot Crystal Pite. In their own work, they explore the thresholds of the body and its transience, and celebrate the indestructibility of the human spirit.
