The dark month of November is the perfect time to commemorate the war and reflect on those we miss. And what offers more comfort than music? Antonín Dvořák understood this as well, reaching straight to the heart with his moving Requiem. A subtle chromatic leitmotif reminds the listener of the omnipresence of death. Expect no superficial gestures or melancholy. This requiem radiates a courageous sorrow that never becomes gloomy or tragic. Dvořák’s largest choral work is a relatively unknown gem. Among the great requiems, it is sometimes unjustly overlooked. A few years ago, Philippe Herreweghe also performed it together with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Collegium Vocale. Once again, they prove that Dvořák wrote the ultimate music of consolation.
