Grand, hushed and dizzying

In The Sleeping Beauty, Morau takes inspiration from the famous fairytale ballet The Sleeping Beauty set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, yet eschewing any narrative logic, he creates a parallel reality driven by one intriguing question: what does the beauty dreams of while she sleeps?
As always, Morau crafts a grand and imaginative universe in which dream and nightmare seamlessly merge. The stage is bathed in red light, wisps of mist cut through monumental group tableaux, and the dancers move in breathtaking costumes as enigmatic figures within Morau’s uncanny choreographic idiom.
The international press has previously praised Morau for his hypnotic visual compositions and cinematic grandeur. In addition to his work for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, he creates for companies such as the Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris and the Staatsballett Berlin. With his own company La Veronal, he has appeared on leading stages including the Festival d’Avignon and Sadler’s Wells. Critics have described his work as a sensory total experience: both spectacular and ominous. He was also named Choreographer of the Year by the leading magazine tanz in both 2023 and 2025.
The Sleeping Beauty is an apocalyptic fantasy of desire and illusion. Not a traditional fairytale, but a choreographic vision: grand, hushed and dizzying.
