Pride goed before a fall
Many opera lovers still have vivid memories of FC Bergman’s magnificent production Les Pêcheurs de perles. The creators from this world-renowned theatre collective are now venturing once again into an opera production for our theatre. This time, they have drawn inspiration from two works by the Belgian composer Peter Benoit, the spiritual father of the Antwerp opera. His Lucifer and De Schelde have gone down in history as the first large-scale oratorios in Dutch. From these two works, Stef Aerts and Marie Vinck have crafted a new production about hubris and unbridled will. A first, as never before have Lucifer and De Schelde been given a full-scale staged production with the proper opera treatment. In Benoit’s scores, a leading role is reserved for an awe-inspiring double chorus, represented here by the full chorus of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, many additional choristers and our children’s chorus. The musical ensemble will be led by conductor Stephan Zilias – his first production as the new music director of OBV.
LANGUAGE: sung in Ductch. With Dutch and English surtitles.
New performance after the two oratoria Lucifer (1866) and De Schelde (1869).
With the support of the Belgian Federal Government’s Tax Shelter scheme.
